Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. and a Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley for 30-year Carson City resident Serapio Mendeguia.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church on Lompa Lane.
Mr. Mendeguia died May 8, 2004, in Carson City. He was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Irurita, Spain. He was 86.
Mr. Mendeguia moved from Spain to Elko, where he worked as a shepherd. He married Maria Jesus in Spain. She preceded him in death Oct. 26, 1995, in Carson City.
Mr. Mendeguia lived in Gardnerville for 23 years and in Elko for five. He worked at Frank Settelmeyer's Ranch, owned the Toki-Ona Basque Restaurant in Carson City and retired from the Nevada Department of Prisons.
He was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church and of the Mendiko Eskalduna Basque Club.
Mr. Mendeguia enjoyed fishing, gardening and watching sports.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Antonio, of Spain.
Among his survivors are his daughters Maria Vega of Carson City, Jackie Basagoitia of Minden and Theresa Rooker of Carson City; a son Carlos of Carson City; a sister Felipa Mendeguia of Spain; 11 grandchildren, Caroline, Kiko, Cristina, Javier, Paul, Brandi, Dilyn, Drew, Jared, Wyatt and Amaya; and one great-grandson, Michael.
Interment will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society for colon cancer research.
