Fernley High's Matt Leestma finished second in the NIAA 3A State Golf Championships on Wednesday.
Leestma finished with a 160 in the event played over the Palms Golf Club and the Oasis Golf Club in Mesquite. Leestma fired a 79 on Wednesday to finish two strokes behind state champion Dane Byers of Virgin Valley (158-79-79).
Dayton High's Kevin Goles, who was tied for the lead after shooting a 79 on Tuesday, struggled to an 89 on Wednesday and settled for seventh with a 168. Yerington's Ryan Rife, who was in contention for the state title after firing an 82 on Tuesday, finished eighth with a 170 after shooting an 88 on Wednesday. Also for Yerington, Kevin O'Keefe took 12th (173-88-85).
Dayton placed fifth in the team standings with a 934 (468-466), finishing behind Lowry (879-449-430), Truckee (868-438-430), Boulder City (855-440-415) and Virgin Valley (852-435-417).
Also for Dayton Shane Castro shot a 184 (98-86), Trent Wood fired a 189 (93-86), Patrick Lassak had a 207 (101-106), Andy Palmer had a 208 (97-111) and Daniel Rodriguez fired an 89 on Wednesday.
