A poster contest for fifth-graders was added to the annual Arbor Day observance by The Carson City Shade Tree Council.
The contest was open to all Carson City fifth-graders, and was in cooperation with the Nevada Division of Forestry this year.
Carson City's contest winner is Mariah West from Capital Christian School.
The Shade Tree Council used West's poster, with the saying "Trees are Terrific in Cities and Towns" as part of the event's flyer. Both West and her teacher, Keith Squires, earned tree-oriented books by the council.
West's poster also won Honorable Mention in the Division of Forestry's state contest. The Carson City Shade Tree Council plans to continue this contest in the future.
The council develops policies to establish and maintain tree cover on public and private lands; maintain public trees in a safe and healthy condition; establish appropriate diversity in tree species; and promotes the conservation of healthy trees.
Duties include advising the Carson City Board of Supervisors on all tree related issues involving public, commercial, industrial and residential areas. The council also hosts training seminars, holds Arbor Day events and special tree-related projects.
