More than 30 seniors will grace the stage at the Carson City Community Center Saturday and Sunday for the annual Senior Follies production. This year's title is "Senior Follies - A Song for All Seasons."
A fund-raiser for the Meals on Wheels program, prior shows have raised more than $100,000. Meals on Wheels provides healthful meals to homebound seniors who cannot cook for themselves or get to the center for a meal.
Dancing, singing, comedy and camaraderie enhance what has become a favorite among the Carson City community. Several solo performances will be presented, as will chorus numbers, dance routines by The Golden Girls and storytelling.
The cast and crew have been working since March preparing for the show. Costumes, dance steps, choreography of performers, it all takes time, patience and a sense of humor to pull everything together.
"This show really helps us a lot," said Janice McIntosh, director of the senior center. "Especially with the increased cost of gasoline. We have two large trucks that deliver the meals.
"The seniors and this show project an image to our community as to what the seniors are really about. They've got wonderful talents and age is just a number. They're people just like anybody else - they're not couch potatoes. They're the greatest people in the world. They keep us moving."
McIntosh said she hopes for two sold-out performances. Last year's three shows made nearly $23,000.
"We'll have home-baked goodies, sodas, good socializing and lots of laughs," she said.
Producing the show is Carolyn DeMar. DeMar has been active in several capacities with the Proscenium Players theater group for many years. Directing is Cathy Hearn, who has directed as well as starred in many theater productions.
And for the ninth consecutive show - all that have been produced - Bobbi Dowell is the music director. She began the Singing Singers at the senior center in 1991 and has been playing the piano since the age of 8. Though she was trained for classical piano, she enjoys popular music.
An large raffle will also be held. Marvin Richardville, a volunteer in the finance office at the senior center, has acquired nearly 200 raffle prizes. Tickets are available at the door for the raffle and show. Buyers of raffle tickets need not be present to win.
