A landslide victory Tuesday night secured Supervisor Shelly Aldean a seat on the Carson City Board of Supervisors for four more years.
"I'm happy I won," the prominent local businesswoman said from her Carson City home. "I'm looking forward to it."
Aldean spent some time at the Republican Central Committee's party at the Plaza Hotel's conference room Election Night, then stopped at Marv Teixeira's lively Station Grille party.
Before election results were tallied, she went home to cook a chicken casserole dinner for her 17-year-old son and his friend.
She checked final results on the secretary of state's Web site and went to bed shortly afterward.
Aldean beat out her challenger, water utilities technician Becky Beisenstein, with 59.7 percent of the vote.
Out of the 20,192 people who voted for Ward 2 Supervisor, 12,047 voted for Aldean and 8,145 voted for Beisenstein.
"I've always said you never take anything for granted," Aldean said. "(Beisenstein) ran a good, clean campaign, and I commend her for running."
Aldean is president of the Glenbrook Co., a Nevada development corporation, and vice president/corporate broker for Eden Managements, a property management company.
She was appointed to the Board of Supervisors in January 2003, following the death of Supervisor Jon Plank. She said her top priority is economic development.
She helped develop the city's Economic Vitality Strategic Plan, and said she wants to see it to fruition.
"I want to see new and creative ways of enhancing the economy," she said, referring to plans for a possible wireless-technology center downtown.
She said the V&T Railroad project is also high on her to-do list.
"The V&T is very important, and I'm likely to become more involved," she said. "We have a long way to go."
Beisenstein spent Election Night at home getting over the flu.
"Congratulations to Shelly," she said with a slightly weaker voice than usual.
She said the experience of running for office was exciting, and she may run again when another seat opens up.
