The Carson High girls soccer team could take this roller coaster ride it's been on the past couple of days to Coney Island.
After an outstanding second half in which it broke a 0-0 tie by scoring three goals in the second half against Galena in a 3-0 win on Tuesday, the Senators were still solid in the first half in settling for a 1-1 tie against Northern 3A power North Tahoe on Thursday.
But even though the game ended in a 1-1 tie, Carson couldn't maintain its level of play in the second half at CHS. "I thought we played well the first half," Carson coach Randy Roser said.
The Senators' only blemish in the first half came when North Tahoe scored on its only chance - a corner kick when Carson left the middle open. Danielle Benamati came back, though, to score off of an assist from Morgan Beam to make it 1-1.
But Carson couldn't sustain a consistent attack in the second half. "We played well until the second half when we started forcing everything to the front instead of relaxing and posessing the ball," Roser said.
The biggest problem for Carson was its corner kicks when the Senators failed to cover the far post. Carson had a couple of chances when corner kicks went to the far post, but no one was there to take advantage.
It got to the point where Roser told his players that if they didn't cover the far post on the next corner kick, not to bother bringing their cleats to today's practice. That was a reference that cleats wouldn't be needed as all the players would be doing is running.
Eventually, Ann Sinnott did cover the far post on a scoring chance. "She almost pulled it off," Roser said. "We'll be working on that."
Carson's best chance came in the second half when Sarah Stalling's free kick bounced off the crossbar. In the waning moments, Ashley Briscoe was able to preserve the tie when she got back to stop a breakaway.
Earlier in the half, starting goalie Allie Otto, who took over in the second half, preserved the tie by making a spectacular diving save. Otto finished with seven saves.
Others who took shots for Carson included Sinnott, Cassie Bowman, Beam, Kathryn Rogers, Erica Roth, Jessica Wehr and Courtney Hayes.
JUNIOR VARSITY
The Senators defeated North Tahoe 3-0 behind goals from Justine von Rumpf, Mackenzie Groth and Jessica Goddard. Midfielders Janell Mahoney and Maria Juarez also turned in solid performances as the Senators improved their record to 9-1.
