Douglas will face Huskies

For as long as anyone can remember, the Douglas-Carson rivalry has prevailed all in the Carson Country area.

But through the last few years, it's been Reno High School that has become the thorn in the Tigers' side at the most inopportune moments.

It was the Huskies two years ago that handed Douglas its first league defeat of the season in a hard-fought battle for the league title at Reno High School.

And last year it was the Huskies, and a snowstorm quickly becoming infamous in Tiger lore, that saw Douglas' perfect season and memorable run at a state championship end in a 34-14 loss in the Northern 4A Regional Championship game at Keith Duke Roman Field.

Tonight the rivalry renews with each team bringing a 2-1 Sierra League record to Reno High for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

"They're a great football team," Douglas head coach Mike Rippee said. "We have a great rivalry going with them, so we'll see how it goes."

Douglas suffered a 26-14 setback to Sierra League-leading Hug High School last week while Reno beat North Valleys 28-21.

The Huskies are led by quarterback John Wallace, who has passed for 477 yards and two touchdowns while completing 37 of 94 passes in seven games this year. Anthony Stewart has paced Reno on the ground, compiling 577 yards on 89 carries and six touchdowns.

Douglas counters with workhorse running back Spike Agosta, who has run for 957 yards on 151 carries for 12 touchdowns. He also has one touchdown reception on the season.

Quarterback Roman Davis has completed 43 passes for 454 yards and six touchdowns, and added 161 yards on 45 carries and three touchdowns on the ground.

Keenan Copp has ground up some important yards from the fullback position with 19 carries for 85 yards on the year.

Tim Coleman and D.J. Brady have been Douglas' top pass catchers this season, with 13 catches for 149 yards and eight catches for 135 yards respectively. Coleman has two touchdown catches and Brady has three.

DAYTON (4-2) AT TRUCKEE (4-1)

The Dust Devils will be hard pressed to make history this week when it travels to Northern 3A frontrunner Truckee for a 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday. But if the Dust Devils can pull off the upset, they would take put themselves in a position to win the Northern 3A regular season title. They would also pick up a school record fifth win and clinch a winning regular season for the first time in school history.

Truckee is coming off a 47-0 win over Fernley, with the highlight coming on a 55-yard field goal by 6-3, 270-pound Benji Islas that would have been good from 65 yards. Truckee also has an outstanding passing combination in quarterback Paul Tierney and receiver Jamie Maehler and an excellent running back in Nick Cabral.

Safety Randon Nunes and tackle Jorge Vazquez lead a defense that held Fernley to 109 yards.

But Dayton also has many weapons, led by sophomore quarterback Travis Wood, who went 12-for-18 for 169 yards in a 20-14 win last week at North Tahoe. He has plenty of targets, including Trent Wood, Danny and Erik Hopper, Kevin May, Josh Aaker and Zane Walker.

FERNLEY (3-4) AT NORTH TAHOE (2-3)

The Vaqueros, 2-2 in league, would take a huge step to clinching a playoff berth with a win, but a loss to the Lakers, who are 1-2 in league, could do serious damage to their playoff hopes. Game time is 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

North Tahoe's Brandon Pffenig returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and Julie Terrazas ran for 107 yards as the Lakers tried to rally from a 20-0 deficit against Dayton. Among Fernley's leaders is quarterback Dan Henderson.

YERINGTON (4-3) AT BATTLE MOUNTAIN (4-2)

Both teams are 4-1 and in the Northern 2A and would be tied for second, but the Lions are ineligible for the playoffs this year. Game time is 7:30 p.m. today.

Junior quarterback Jake Radford went 12-for-20 for 263 yards and six touchdowns for the Longhorns in last week's 59-10 win over Whittell. Yerington also has plenty of weapons, including Mikey Burt, Josh Inserra and Tommy Menesini.

GALENA (0-7) AT MANOGUE (7-0)

It doesn't get any easier for the Grizzlies as they travel to face arguably the Northern 4A's top team right now for a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday.
