Danny Klaich has been hired as chief legal counsel for the university system.

Klaich, a lifelong Reno resident, is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno. He also served two terms as a member of the Board of Regents.

He replaces Tom Ray, who came under fire from the attorney general's office for advising the board it could legally hold closed-door meetings which resulted in the demotion of Community College of Southern Nevada President Ron Remington and CCSN legislative lobbyist John Cummings. Ray remains on the chancellor's office legal staff.

Klaich was student body president at UNR and has practiced law in the Reno area for more than 20 years. For the past 10 years, he has been a principal in Clean Fuels Technology, a company developing a market for "emulsified" fuel products which mix water with traditional hydrocarbon fuels such as diesel to improve their emission characteristics.

His salary as legal counsel to the board and chancellor's office will be $150,000 a year.
