Douglas 'Spikes' Reno

Just one glance along the Douglas sidelines Friday night told the entire tale.

More then 20 former players, all seniors from last season's dream team that went 11-0 before losing to Reno in the Northern 4A Regional Championship, gathered by the Douglas bench at Reno High School hoping to watch their former teammates serve up some delayed revenge for the 34-14 loss.

The current Tigers delivered. Big.

Douglas running back Spike Agosta tallied nearly 300 yards of total offense, kicked two field goals and scored three touchdowns and kicked two field goals as the Tigers rolled over the Huskies 41-0 in Sierra League action.

"This was for those guys standing right over there," Agosta said, gesturing to his former teammates. "Revenge was No. 1 on our priority list this week.

"All last year's seniors, this was for them."

Douglas played with a fire throughout the game that Reno just could not counter, as the Tigers picked off five passes, forced a fumble and registered a sack on Reno quarterback John Wallace. Douglas only briefly allowed the Huskies to cross the 50-yard-line in the first half, once to the 46-yard-line on the third drive of the game.

Wallace also only managed three completions in the half, all to Douglas players.

"We talked a lot this week about taking care of some unfinished business," Douglas coach Mike Rippee said. "They stepped up and played one of their best games all year long.

"A lot of these guys who were watching on the sidelines over here, they had a big stake in this too. We had a great year last year, but I think this was a game that all of them wanted to come back and see."

And the result?

"This was exactly what we wanted," Agosta said. "You couldn't ask for much more."

The Tigers scored on their first five possessions and on two of their three second half possessions.

Quarterback Roman Davis started things up taking a 2-yard run in to culminate an 11-yard drive to open the game. Davis finished the game 5-of-10 for 158 yards and a touchdown pass, to go with his score on the ground.

Agosta kicked a 25-yard field goal on the next possession, and a 34-yard field goal on the following possession. He took a screen pass from Davis down the right side before cutting up the middle for an 80-yard touchdown on the following drive.

Agosta added touchdown runs of 32 and 91 yards before Keenan Copp intercepted a Wallace pass and returned it 50 yards to the Reno seven.

Copp finished what he started two plays later, punching it in from a yard out.

"Our line was absolutely awesome tonight," Agosta said. "Tyson Estes, Datin Whatcott, Nate Newton, Trevor Freitas, Bryan Brady, everyone was on their game tonight."

Douglas improved to 3-1 in league with the crucial win and returns home to host Wooster Friday at 7 p.m.
