Douglas High's Josh Sorich and Gabe Groben and Galena's Wes Reimer and Chris Schwartz advanced to the semifinals in the Northern 4A boys doubles championships on Friday at Reno's Plumas Center.
For Carson, Josh Caron and Tyler Lewis advanced to the quarterfinals in boys doubles while Greta Schnaser and Amber Whitworth made the quarterfinals in girls doubles.
Groben and Sorich, the Sierra League's No. 1 seed, advanced by winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2. Reimer and Schwartz, the High Desert's No. 1 seed, won 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals against the Tigers' Jeremy Henningsen and Matt Whipple. Henningsen and Whipple advanced to the quarterfinals by winning 7-5, 6-1 and then beating Galena's J.B. Shresta and Ben Lundahl 6-2, 6-2.
Caron and Lewis, the Sierra League's No. 2 seed, won 6-3, 6-2 and beat Galena's Matt Archer and Kevin Sawyer 6-2, 6-4 to make the quarterfinals where they lost to the High Desert's No. 3 seed from Manogue, 5-7, 3-6.
In girls doubles, Whitworth and Schnaser won 6-3, 6-4 and 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 before losing 0-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinals. Also for Carson, Shanni Eng and Amy Milholland won 6-4, 7-5 before losing in the second round 0-6, 0-6. The Tigers' Trish Salazar and Christina Milner also advanced to the quarterfinals, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-4, 7-5 before losing 0-6, 1-6.
As expected in girls singles, Galena's Julie Burgarello, the favorite to win the zone title, beat Carson's Kelsey Joyce 6-0, 6-0. Burgarello hasn't lost a game in her three matches. Also in girls singles, the Tigers' Nikki Villoria lost in the second round 0-6, 1-6.
In boys singles for Galena, Collin Davis advanced to the quarterfinals by winning 6-4, 6-2 before losing 0-6, 0-6, Abe Rubenstein advanced to the quarterfinals by winning 6-1, 7-5 before losing 6-7 (5-7), 3-6 and Galena's Gavin Dellar lost in the second round 2-6, 1-6.
The semifinals and finals will be played today.
