Fake punt lifts Yerington to victory

Yerington always has the option to call for a fake punt when it has the opening. But Lions football coach Cody Neville never imagined the call would be made in this situation.

The Lions called for a fake punt from their own end zone and the end result was a 96-yard touchdown run by Josh Inserra that helped put the game away for Yerington in a 28-15 win over Silver Stage on Friday.

The play helped Yerington complete a comeback as Silver Stage led 15-12 at halftime. "We'll probably take stupid luck over skill any time," Neville said. "I never expected them to go for it. That was kind of the breaking point. We got lucky and it worked."

Led by quarterback Anthony Jeffris and Laramie Crawford, who ran for close to 150 yards, Silver Stage kept Yerington off balance in the first half with its option. Tight end Josh Tromerhauser also had key receptions for Silver Stage.

"We made some adjustments at halftime," Nevill said. "We were able to slow them down in the second half."

Yerington's other scores came on Mikey Burt's 19-yard scoring run and scoring runs for Ricky Menesini and quarterback Matt Richardson scored on runs. Richardson also ran it in for the two-pointers after the Lions' last two scores.

Inserra had 123 yards on six carries and Menesini ran for close to 100 yards. Brian Ausmus intercepted two passes and Jeremy Means intercepted a pass for Yerington.

FERNLEY 28, DAMONTE RANCH 0

Cody McDougal and Travis McCurry each rushed for a 100 yards and McDougal scored on two touchdown runs in the nonleague win for the Vaqueros.

McCurry ran for 138 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Dan Henderson. McDougal ran for 100 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 23 yards.

Fernley's other touchdown came on a 16-yard pass from Henderson to Dustin McGuinn. Steve Geil went 4-for-4 on extra points. Travis Munoz gained 43 yards on nine carries and Henderson completed four passes for 73 yards and the two scores.
