Galena players advance in tennis

There won't be any team titles for the Galena tennis program, but the Grizzlies are still in the running for championships in singles and doubles.


The Galena boys tennis team lost to Palo Verde 31-14 in the NIAA 4A State Finals on Friday at Reno's Plumas Courts. But Galena's Julie Burgarello advanced to the girls singles semifinals while the Grizzlies Wes Reimer and Chris Schwartz made it to the boys doubles semifinals.


Against Palo Verde, Schwartz and Reimer swept, winning 7-5, 6-0, 6-2. Also for Galena, Abe Rubenstein won 6-1 in singles and Colin Davis and Gavin Deller won 7-6, (9-7).


In girls singles, Burgarello cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sierra Vista's Danielle Ingwaldson in the quarterfinals. Burgarello will face The Meadows Anya Bukina in the semifinals.


Schwartz and Reimer beat Coronado's Andy McCosh and Kevin Schlegel 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to make it to the semifinals to face Palo Verde's Jake Lysgaard and Jason Yoong, a team they beat 6-0 on Friday. The semifinals and finals will be played today.
