Rankl first, CHS second by one

Carson High's Liz Rankl has established herself as the best golfer in the Sierra League for now by winning low medalist honors for the second straight week.

If the Carson girls golf team keeps going the way it is, the Senators may join Rankl as the lowest scoring team in the Sierra League as soon as next week.

Rankl shot a 10-over par 82 on Tuesday at Fernley to win her second straight title in a Sierra League Tournament. For the third straight week, Carson improved its score as a team and scored under 500 for the second straight week.

After finishing with a 497 last week at Silver Oak, Carson finished with a 491 at Fernley to take second just one stroke behind Reno High, which finished with a 490. South Tahoe took third with a 511.

"We're putting some pressure on them," said Carson coach Terry Gingell about Reno, who won the first two Sierra League events going away. "We're catching up.

"The kids are playing well and really progressing. All in all, a very good day. I'm very pleased with how they're improving."

For the second straight week, Rankl ended her round with two straight birdies and won by seven strokes. She finished with an 80 to win by 10 strokes at Silver Oak. "She's playing really well," Gingell said. "It's fun to watch."

Two other Carson players were able to break 100 - Grace Ray, who shot a 97 and freshman Lydia Peri, who fired a 99. "She's doing exceptionally well, I think," said Gingell about Peri.

Also for Carson, Samantha Wang shot a 105. "She felt like she could have done better but that's still a decent score," Gingell said.

In addition for Carson, Sarah Metcalf had a 114 and freshman Michelle Kop shot a 108. The next Sierra League event will be this Tuesday at Empire Ranch.
