Robert Harold Berger

A memorial service for Robert Harold Berger will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City with the Rev. Bruce Kochsmeier officiating.

Mr. Berger died Sept. 19, 2004, in a Reno hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born April 3, 1935, at Mae Noonan's maternity house in Carson City to Harold Joseph and Olive Dunn Berger.

He attended Carson City schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1953. He attended Reno Business College.

Mr. Berger purchased Berger's News Stand from his father and operated the business on Carson Street across from the old post office until he changed careers and became a traffic analyst with the Nevada Department of Transportation. He retired from NDOT in 1994 after 23 years.

He had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church since he was a child. He was a member of several service clubs: 20-30 Club, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and Eagles. He was a volunteer to the Nevada Day Committee for many years and served in the National Guard.

He coached Carson City Little League in the 1960s and 1970s and was a "Y" Indian Guide leader. He was an avid 49er fan from the days of Kezar Stadium, having season tickets at 3Com Park for 10 years. He enjoyed spending time at Eagle Lake near Susanville, Calif.

Among his survivors are his wife, Elinor Cooke; children David and Dawn Berger of Carson City, Doug and Kani Berger of Lakewood, Calif., Dan and Dennell Berger, Darrin and Natalie Berger, Linda and Steve Baxter, Jack and Cheryl Cooke, all of Carson City, and Netti and Mike DeBusk of Wellington; grandchildren Katelyn and Nathen Berger of Carson City, Monika and Joshua Berger of Lakewood, Daniel and Deborah Berger, Samantha Berger, Heather Grim, Jennifer Baxter and Mike Cooke, all of Carson City, and Mikayla, Tanner and Jacob DeBusk of Wellington; two great-grandsons; sisters Margaret Baxter of Sparks, Dorothy Yenter of Carson City, Nina Cross of Carson City, Ruth Hurley of California; brother, Bill of Elko and many other extended family members.
