Seniors and mothers who qualify for state assistance can sign up Tuesday for a free monthly food distribution program at two Carson City locations.

Janice Hoke, Food Bank of Northern Nevada communications manager, said the food bank is adding a new distribution center at ComputerCorps, 6373 Highway 50 East. It's also moving the second distribution center to the new location of Ron Woods Family Resource Center, 212 Winnie Lane. The resource center moved from Industrial Park Drive.

"People accustomed to getting their food at Industrial Park Drive can still get it there," she said. "But new people who want to sign up need to go to Winnie Lane."

Here about 200 seniors and 20 women and children are registered for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.

"It's mostly for seniors because there seems to be a great need among seniors for food."

She said mothers, infants and children up to age 6 are eligible if they are not receiving Women, Infants and Children program benefits. If mothers are on the WIC waiting list, they can get on the supplemental food program until their WIC clears.

Each food box is tailored to the recipient's age group. The boxes are distributed every fourth Tuesday of the month at scheduled times. Each 30-pound package contains canned meat, fruits, fruit juice, cheese, cereal, vegetables, peanut butter and evaporated milk.
