Carson tennis teams fall to Reno

At least the Carson High boys tennis team wasn't shut out in the competitive stage of its match with Reno High.

Carson knew the match with Northern Nevada power Reno would show where it stands and the Senators found out how far they've got to go to compete with the Huskies in a 33-12 loss on Thursday at Centennial Park.

Chris Wear and Bryt Lewis provided the Senators with their only win in the first two rounds as Reno built a 27-3 lead. Wear and Lewis won 6-4 in doubles. Both teams substituted liberally for the final round.

In the first two rounds, one of the most competitive matches for Carson came in singles in a 5-7 loss for Johnny Kim. Nick Smallman and Jeff Van Epps also played well in their two doubles matches, losing 3-6, 5-7.

In the final round, Carson swept in singles as Daniel Nieman won 6-1, Brad Cobler won 6-2 and Ryan Dwyer won 6-3. Adam Houghton and Todd Crowell won 6-1 in doubles as well.

"We're playing a class act program," Carson coach Pat Houlihan said. "We realize that it's a measuring tool."

Reno is essentially a year-round program and Houlihan said the Senators will also need to have an off-season program just as extensive to compete with the Huskies.

RENO 39, CARSON GIRLS 6

As expected, Reno also rolled against the Carson girls tennis team in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Senators will now focus on going for second in the Sierra League when it hosts South Tahoe on Tuesday and North Tahoe on Wednesday.

"We did all right," Carson coach Diane Roberts said. "They're tough. Now we're looking at both Tahoe teams."

Carson did receive impressive efforts from Hilary Schlager and Kelsey Joyce, who combined for all three Senator wins in singles. Joyce won 6-1, 6-2 and Schlager won 6-4. Among the other more competitive matches for Carson came when Lisa Midboe played well in two 3-6 losses and Greta Schnaser and Amber Whitworth played well in a 4-6 loss in doubles.
