Charles Walter Covert, 77, a Carson City resident for the past 18 months, died Sept. 19, 2004, in Carson City, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Oliver Taylor and Bertha Florence Smith Covert.

He graduated from Perry High School in Pittsburgh in 1945.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in Dubois, Wyo., and Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Mr. Covert was a career pilot. He started flying seaplanes from the river in downtown Pittsburgh in 1942. He flew for Eastern Airlines in 1954.

In 1955, he began a career with Capitol Airlines, which became United Airlines, from which he retired as a captain in 1984.

He served in both the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 and the U.S. Coast Guard from 1947-49.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Albert, and sister, Dorothy O'Conner.

Among his survivors are his wife, Suzanne, of Carson City and daughter, Melanie Katsoupis and grandson, Jared Katsoupis, both of Gofftown, N.H.

A brief memorial service was held by the family.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Leukemia Society or the American Cancer Society.
