Carson track impressive at Fallon

The Carson High boys and girls track teams showed their among the best programs in Northern Nevada on Saturday at the Fallon Invitational.

Carson's boys won the meet with 106 points. Hug was second with 79 and was followed by McQueen with 72. Dayton's and Smith Valley's boys also had impressive meets as Dayton was fourth with 60 1/3 points and Smith Valley was fifth with 52 1/2 points.

Carson's girls took second with 80 points, finishing behind Elko with 116. Galena and Reno High, two other Northern Nevada powers, competed, but weren't at full strength in the meet that featured 22 schools.

Among the top athletes for Carson were Josh Heilman, who was a four-time winner, Matt Moore and Kayla Sanchez.

It should also be noted that Elko's girls were able to pile up 71 points in the distances as many of Reno's top distance runners, including Mel Lawrence, and Galena's top distance runners didn't compete. Had Reno and Galena been at full strenght, it would have cut into Elko's point total considerably.

"We had actually a real good day," Carson coach Todd Ackerman said. "The kids all ran really, really well.

"The girls were actually in the hunt to win it until the last couple of events. I'm really happy with the way they came and competed."

Heilman won the 100 in 11.29 seconds while Douglas High's Tyler Tinstman finished in 11.77 and Carson's Sam Pincock was eight in 12.05. Heilman also won the 200 in 23.51 while Pincock was fifth in 24.52.

In addition, Heilman was on the winning 400 and 800 relays. Heilman, Bryan Maffei, Pincock and Tilor Smith won the 400 relay in 44.27 and Heilman, Pincock, Seth Carter and Moore won the 800 relay in 1:33.16. "He had a pretty good day," said Ackerman about Heilman in an understatement.

Carson's team of Smith, Floyd Hernandez, Carter and Moore won the 1,600 relay in 3:31.3. Dayton was second in 3:39.4.

Moore and Carter went one-two in the 300 hurdles, which were missing a flight of hurdles. Moore finished in 39.48 and Carter finished in 41.05.

Other top local finishers included: 400 - Dayton's Billy Mountjoy, third, 52.27; Hernandez, fourth, 53.35. 800 - Dayton's Joey Mountjoy, first, 2:05.6. 1,600 - Dayton's Jose Barajas, third, 4:43.3. 3,200 - Barajas, fourth, 3,200,10:49.3.

110 high hurdles - Moore, second, 15.34; Dayton's Josh Wagoner, fifth, 16.75. High jump - Douglas' Ryan Bertucci, second, 6-4. Shot put - Carson's Eric Walther, third, 44-6. Discus - Walther, fourth, 133-7.

Also for Dayton, Billy Mountjoy took fifth in the pole vault at 12 feet. Smith Valley's Jordan Savidge was first at 15-0 and teammate Sam Marsheck was second at 14-6.

In a tight competition in the long jump, Savidge won at 21-1 1/4 while Smith was third at 20-9 3/4.

Making Carson's performance more impressive was it was not at full strength in a few events. Jon Christensen didn't compete in the pole vault, the Senators didn't have top thrower Stephen Waicul and Smith didn't compete in the triple jump.

For the girls, Sanchez won the 100 in an outstanding automated time of 12.69. Sanchez also ran on the winning 800 relay along with Sandra McAlman, Sinead McSweeney and Amanda Benson as they finished in 1:47.96.

200 - Benson, second, 27.67; McSweeney, seventh, 29.24. 400 - McSweeney, seventh, 1:04.57. 800 - Christy Works, sixth, 2:36.9. 1,600 - Works, second, 5:44.2. 100 hurdles - Sanchez, second, 15.64. 300 hurdles - Sanchez, second, 46.58; Harmony Bennington, fourth, 50.05; Benson, fifth, 50.29.

400 relay - Carson, fifth, 54.11. Pole vault - Amber Whitworth, sixth, 8-6. Shot put - Alex McAlman, seventh, 33-0. Discus - Alex McAlman, second, 111-0. For Douglas, Alicia Sturgess took second in the high jump at 5-0.
