Carson baseball defeats North Valleys

There's nothing spectacular about the Carson High baseball team. It's just a solid bunch.

Mike Teixeira went the distance for the win as the Senators (15-2, 4-0) put together a workmanlike 6-1 win at North Valleys on Thursday. Teixeira pitched a five-hitter in striking out four and walking two.

"It was a good day," Carson coach Steve Cook said. "We didn't go out there and wow anybody by any means. But we just played solid baseball.

"We played good team ball offensively. I'm real happy with the way we're playing right now."

Carson broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Royal Good singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Logan Parsley walked and moved to second on a pitch in the dirt and Murph Gardner, who had four RBI, followed with a two-run single. Gardner went on to score on Sean Costella's RBI sacrifice fly that made it 3-0.

North Valleys scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth on the strength of a triple. It was the only threat that the Panthers had. "He kept his pitch count down," said Cook about Teixeira.

Carson took a 5-1 lead in the fifth after Good and Kevin Schlange singled and pulled off a double steal. They both went on to score on an error. In the seventh, Schlange singled and eventually scored on Gardner's single.

Good, Schlange and Gardner all had two hits and Jack Jacquet, Parsley and Brooks Greenlee all added a hit for Carson.

The Senators will host North Valleys in a doubleheader at Ron McNutt Field, beginning at 1 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on KPTL 1300 Radio. Jacquet and Kyle Mandoki will start for Carson while Josh Caron figures to be the first pitcher used in relief if needed.
