Carson City

Astronomy Class for Science Teachers Starting at WNCC

"Astronomy for Teachers," a course for science teachers of grades sixth through 12th, is this summer at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada Community College in Carson City.

The field experience class is June 20-25, with pre-sessions on Sunday and May 21. Teachers taking the class earn three graduate credits through the University of Nevada, Reno College of Extended Studies. Grants are available for reimbursement for some expenses.

Douglas County

Douglas County sign ordinance community workshop April 27

The Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority will host a community workshop at 9 a.m. April 27 to gather comments from residents regarding the current Douglas County sign ordinance. The workshop will be in the Chamber of Commerce Boardroom at 1513 Highway 395 in Gardnerville.

"The purpose of the workshop is to gather input from the community in order to recommend specific changes or additions to the current sign ordinance that serve the interests of our community," said Executive Director Skip Sayre. "This meeting provides an opportunity for local business to provide organized input to Douglas County, through the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, to enable officials to respond to concerns and if appropriate, consider changes to the ordinance."

Douglas County Planning, Economic Development Manager Mimi Moss will provide an overview of the current sign ordinance and answer questions.

Members of the Tahoe Douglas Chamber of Commerce and residents of the Lake Tahoe portion of Douglas County are also invited. Attendees are asked to RSVP to the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority at 782-8144.

Lyon County

Wild Horse Freedom fund-raiser at NV 50

A fund-raiser for Men and Women for Wild Horse Freedom will be from 4-7 p.m. April 23 at NV 50 Restaurant & Ultra Lounge. Tickets are $20 each or $40 for a couple before April 18. After April 18, tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 each or $50 a couple.

There will be a buffet with a no-host bar, and raffle tickets will be sold. Entertainment will be Rockin' Robin and Trilogy, a country-music band. Attire is Western wear.

Citizens for Affordable Homes lauds volunteers

Citizens for Affordable Homes Inc., Nevada's leading builder of self-help homes, will honor volunteers who make a difference in our community during National Volunteer Week April 17-23.

CAHI will host a barbecue at noon April 23 to commemorate the event. The barbecue will be at the construction site off of Retail Road in Dayton.

This year's theme, "Inspire By Example!" sets the stage for local and national organizations to applaud the efforts of volunteers and encourage others to help strengthen their communities. National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network.

CAHI has already recognized the efforts of several of its volunteers with the President's Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes contributions of volunteers nationwide who are answering President Bush's call to serve others. To participate, Jeff Coulam at (775) 883-7101, ext. 108.
