Carson boys and girls track take second

The Carson girls track team didn't have the best of luck, but still narrowly missed out on winning the Reed Invitational on Saturday.

It looks like it could be a two-team race for the Northern 4A title between Reno High and the Senator girls and on Saturday, Reno edged Carson by 1.3 points. The Senator boys also finished second with 83 points and Galena won the title with 111.

If not for several bad breaks, Carson's girls would have likely came away with the title. But Carson coach Todd Ackerman was still pleased with his teams' performance.

"We gave some points away, but we also got some points from some places I didn't think we'd get, especially in the girls," Ackerman said.

"Overall I'm real happy. It was a pretty good two days for the Senator track team. They competed well."

Kayla Sanchez continued to shine with a personal best of 12.38 seconds to win the 100 meters. Carson's 1,600 relay team of Lindsay Ford, Sinead McSweeney, Christy Works and Amanda Benson also won in 4:13.43.

The team of Crista Dixon, Sandra McAlman, Ford and Kelli Brothers had a season best of 52.0 to take second in the 400 relay. Ashley Terry also placed in three events with personal bests in the long jump and triple jump. She took sixth in the long jump (15-9), third in the triple jump (34-1) and fifth in the high jump.

Other top finishes for Carson were: Discus - Alex McAlman, fourth, 104-10. 1,600 - Works, 5:38.47. 200 - Benson, fifth, 27.67. Pole vault - Amber Whitworth, fifth, 8-6. Distance medley relay (Gloria Sosa, Julisa Gonzalez, Megan Myers, Works), fourth.

The highlight for the Carson boys came in the 1,600 relay when Matt Moore beat Manogue's Kenny Viser in a photo finish. Moore, Adam Houghton, Floyd Hernandez and Seth Carter won in 3:30.56.

But Carson also had its share of bad luck in the 800 relay when it was placed in the slower heat by mistake. The team of Josh Heilman, Sam Pincock, Carter and Moore won the heat by 60 meters and took second overall in 1:32.53. Palo Verde won in 1:32.33.

When asked if he thought his team would have won had it run in the faster heat, Ackerman said, "I think a very good chance. It would have been interesting."

Also for Carson, Heilman ran a personal best 11.20 to take third in the 100 while Sam Pincock was eighth. Heilman was also fourth in the 200 in 23.01.

Other top finishes for Carson were: Pole vault - Jon Christensen, fifth, 12-6. Shot put - Stephen Waicul, fifth, 48-2. Discus - Waicul, third, 139-10; Eric Walther, sixth, 128-0. 400 relay - seventh, 45.90. 110 hurdles - Moore, third, 15.45; Seth Carter, 16.32.
