Carson softball is a winner

Mandy Carvin faced one batter over the minimum through four innings as the Carson High softball team took care of business with a 10-0 win over South Tahoe on Thursday at CHS.

Carson (8-6-1, 4-3) scored in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the Sierra League game on the 10-run rule.

"We did what we needed to do," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "We hit the ball hard."

Carvin allowed only one baserunner when South Tahoe singled in the second. She struck out six. "You can't ask anything more from her than what she did," Vickrey said. Christa Casci finished up, retiring the side in order in the fifth while striking out one.

Carson took a 2-0 lead in the first when Candice Rutledge singled and scored on Dacey Hassey's double. Hassey eventually scored on a passed ball.

The Senators made it 4-0 in the second on the strength of singles by Abby Rankl and Thera Frank.

Carson broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. Jamie Yenter singled, Kaitlin Burroughs had an RBI on a squeeze bunt and Casci and Hassey had RBI singles during the rally.

In the fifth, Yenter singled and went to second on a passed ball. Rankl hit a ball to the right side and when South Tahoe tried to throw Yenter out at third, she scored on the overthrow to end the game.

Hassey had two hits and two RBI and Rutledge and Yenter each had two hits for Carson. Shortstop Liz Rankl sat out the game with a pulled muscle.

Robyn Conn moved from center field to play shortstop. Rankl will also sit out today's nonleague game against Manogue at 3:30 p.m. at CHS.
