Instead of the latest celebrity gossip or the talk-show circuit, local cable television subscribers can tune in next week to a discussion on a topic that hits closer to home: water rights.
Ron Kendall, president of the Leadership Alumni Association of Carson City and Douglas County, will moderate Thursday's discussion, "Tri-County Visions," on channel 10, Carson City's public-access station.
"I'm the optimist, but I believe if this thing goes well, in two or three months, we'll be asked to do something else similar to it," he said Tuesday.
The association broadcast a show in October featuring a round-table discussion with Carson City Manager Linda Ritter and Douglas County Manager Dan Holler. Kendall hopes to do another program of discussions of methamphetamine use in Carson City. He said both managers enjoyed the discussion and asked to do it again.
The public is invited to watch the filming, Kendall said. His association is made up of graduates of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Carson City class.
Ritter, Holler, Lyon County Manager Donna Kristaponis and Carson Water Subconservancy District Manager Edwin James will participate in the one-hour show filmed Thursday in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Ritter, a 2004 graduate of the Leadership Carson City class, said each person will spend a few minutes talking about area-specific water issues.
"Carson City recently had to increase water rates to pay for additional water production to meet our peak demand in summer," she said. "I'll also talk about arsenic and the new standards the feds have put on us."
James said he'll discuss regional water projects, such as the Marlette system, flooding, maintaining habitat and river restoration projects.
"If you have any interest in the river, it'll be useful to know what is happening in your area, and for those living in the watershed, what's happening with your neighbors," he said.
