A inmate broke both of his heels Tuesday after jumping from the second level of the special-needs unit in the Carson City jail.
Robert Nadon, 34, was possibly upset when he learned from his attorney he would not be released from jail Tuesday, said acting-Sgt. Ken Steel. He had been in custody since March 15, when he was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of stolen property, ex-felon in possession of a firearm, obtaining money under false pretenses and sex-offender failure to register.
Steel said at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nadon paged a deputy, asking if there was a psychiatrist available.
"He said he needed to see him today, or he was going to jump off the second tier. As the deputy attempted to find out if the psychiatrist would be available, (Nadon) went upstairs, stepped across the railing, crouched down, and jumped - feet first," said Steel.
When officers entered the unit, Nadon was writhing in pain on the ground. Other inmates in the unit paid little attention, Steel said.
Nadon was taken to Carson-Tahoe Hospital, where doctors diagnosed his broken heels. Steel said he might have to undergo surgery to repair the damage to one.
Nadon waived his preliminary hearing last week and is expected to plead to sex-offender failure to register, which carries a penalty of one to five years in prison, said Deputy District Attorney Matt Griffin.
