Senators swing their way to victory

Despite tough conditions, the Carson High golf team returned to form in a Sierra League Tournament at Rosewood on Tuesday.

Carson won the shortened tournament in which only nine holes were counted due to the weather. The Senators finished at 206 while Reno High finished at 210.

The Senators were led by Kyle Bacon, who continued his solid play with a 39 to finish in a tie for second. "Kyle Bacon played another strong round for us," Carson coach Rod Butler said.

Also for Carson, J.T. Cockerill shot a 40, Jimmy Potter fired a 41, Kyle Winter had a 42, Tyson Roser had a 44 and Isaac Holt added a 45.

Even though the tournament was called after nine holes, Carson is still credited with the win. In four Sierra League tournaments, Carson and Reno have been the top two teams each time with both teams winning twice.

It was also a much better effort for Carson than a week ago when it lost to Reno by 14 strokes.

"It was tough, it was blowing," said about the wind and the conditions. The greens were covered with a quarter-inch of snow and hail, which led to the tournament to be called. "As soon as we got everybody in, it cleared up and melted off," Butler said.

Butler said the result of the tournament was heading down to the wire had it been finished, adding everyone was playing much better on their back nine.

Butler noted that Roser, who struggled to his 44, had shot just 2-over-par over seven holes on his back nine.

"We were playing real well and so was Reno," Butler said. "It would have been real close. If we had gone 18, it would have been interesting who would have won. Overall the guys played well."

The next Sierra League tournament will be held Tuesday at Genoa Lakes.
