Seniors' trek to Gold Country set for May

Plans for the annual winery trip through the Carson City Senior Citizens Center have been finalized. The trip will be May 13-15 to the western foothills' Gold Country of Nevada City and Grass Valley, Calif.

The trip includes train rides, entertainment, wineries, living history and sightseeing.

The cost of the three-day trip is $275 per person, double occupancy; $373, single occupancy. Included is round-trip transportation by motor coach from the Senior Citizens Center, two nights lodging in Grass Valley at the Best Western Gold Country Inn, two continental breakfasts, narrow-gauge train ride to History Hill, barbecue lunch and entertainment, winery tours at three locations and a gourmet picnic lunch, Empire Mine State Historic Park and the famous "Miners Lunch."

A participant meeting is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the senior center, 911 Beverly Drive.

The trip requires a minimum number of 35 participants, maximum of 46. If interested, sign up in the Interest List Binder at the center's reception desk.

CV resident has art showing at BAC

Gardnerville resident Ann Spaulding will display her realist oil paintings from April 30-May 20 as the featured artist at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery on W. King St. in Carson City. She is a member of the Nevada Artists Association and the Carson Valley Art Association. The Brewery Arts Gallery is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Contra dancing on tap at BAC

There will be a contra dance from 7-10 p.m. Saturday in the second-floor ballroom at the Brewery Arts Center 449 W. King St. Pioneer Family Dance brings caller Tom Thoreau and the band Wild Sage.

Adults are $8 each and kids under 16 are free with a parent.

Kerak Carson Valley Shrine Club hosts Potentate for dinner

The annual Potentate's visit to the Kerak Carson Valley Shrine Club will be Saturday at the Carson Valley Inn. Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

"Teaching Writing Throughout the Curriculum, K-12/Writing Project," a three-credit summer course, will be taught beginning June 20 in the William J. Raggio Building, Room 2030, University of Nevada, Reno

Classes are , 8 a.m.-noon Monday-thursday June 20-23 and June 27-30; and 8 a.m.-noon Tuesday-Friday July 5-8.

The course teaches the philosophy of the National Writing Project, which emphasizes teachers teaching teachers.

Participants will be encouraged in their own personal writing, instructed in the latest in classroom writing research, and shown techniques for effective teaching of the writing process in their classrooms. Strategies for teaching the state writing standards (5.0, 6.0 and 7.0), writing traits and district competencies will be highlighted.
