Carson track has an outstanding meet

Josh Heilman, Matt Moore and Kayla Sanchez continued to turn in impressive performances to help lead another outstanding performance for the Carson High boys and girls track teams at the Silver State Invitational at Spanish Springs.

Carson's boys and girls teams were both in the running for the title at the meet, but team scores were unavailable. Among the teams that weren't competing were Northern 4A power Reno High, Reed, South Tahoe and Fallon.

But Galena, which figures to be one of the teams to beat in the Northern 4A, did compete.

Carson also wasn't at full strength. Among the girls who were missing were Andrea Keirstead, Ashley Terry and Lindsay Ford while Sam Pincock didn't compete in the boys. Sanchez also didn't compete in one of her best events, the 100 hurdles.

"We did some good things," Carson coach Todd Ackerman said. "We're still looking at people, trying to figure out what to do with them. It was a good day for the Senators."

Heilman won four events as he swept the 100 and 200 meters. He won the 100 in a non-converted time of 11.0. Tilor Smith took third in 11.1 and freshman Floyd Hernandez and Bryan Maffei each finished in 11.5.

Moore won the 300 hurdles in a converted time of 39.34, the best time in Northern Nevada this year. Seth Carter took fourth in 42.4.

Moore also took second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.06 while freshman Will Holbert finished in 17.9. Sanchez won the 100 in 12.3 and took second in the 300 hurdles in 44.8 and the 200 in 25.3.

Stephen Waicul also had personal best throw of 166 feet, one-half inch to take second behind a thrower from Spanish Springs, who went 173-0. Northern Nevada's other top discus thrower, Josh Magua didn't compete. Alex McAlman won the girls shot put at 34-4.

Carson also swept the 800 relays as the girls team of Sanchez, Sandra McAlman, Sinead McSweeney and Amanda Benson won in a season best 1:46.7 and the boys team of Heilman, Maffei, Carter and Moore won in a season best 1:29.6. Heilman, Hernandez, Maffei and Jeremy Gray won the 400 free relay in 44.3 as well.

In addition, Carson swept the 1,600 relays as Carter, Gray, Smith and Moore won in 3:31 and Works, Sandra McAlman, McSweeney and Benson won in 4:13.

Other top performances for Carson included: Girls 100 hurdles - Sumantha Pitts, seventh, 19.7. Girls 100 - Crista Dixon, 13.5; Kelli Brothers, 13.8. Boys 1,600 - Chad Shroy, third, 4:40.7. Girls 1,600 - Christy Works, second, 5:37.7; Gloria Sosa, fifth, 5:58.7. Girls 400 relay - third, 55.1

Boys long jump - Smith, third, 20-0 1/2; Andrew Rodriguez, 17-2. Girls long jump - Sandra McAlman, 16-6 1/2; Pitts, 13-3 1/2; Lisa Midboe 12-5. Boys 400 - Gray, fourth, 51.9; Hernandez, seventh, 53.1; Adam Houghton, eighth, 53.9. Girls 400 - Works, fourth, 1:01.7; McSweeney, eighth, 1:04.4.

Girls triple jump - Sandra McAlman, fifth, 32-6; Midboe, 27-9. Girls 800 - Benson, second, 2:29.2. Boys 800 - Shroy, seventh, 2:08.9. Boys shot put - Waicul, second, 47-11 1/2; Eric Walther, fifth, 44-7; Donald McMurtry, 41-3 1/2; Caleb Konder 40-2 1/2.

Girls 200 - Works, 27.7; Brothers, 29.4. Boys discus - Konder 118-10; McMurtry 108-8. Girls discus - Alex McAlman, second, 105-10; Elia Bell 84-0 1/2; Amy Milholland 71-11. Carson had some impressive efforts in the junior varsity meet as well, which included: Boys 400 - Travis Trethan, fifth, 56.5. 300 hurdles - Holbert, third, 43.31. 100 - Jason Dittenber, second, 12.1; Brian Mattoon, seventh, 12.2. Girls 100 - Jena Greenburg, second, 14.4. Boys 800 relay, third, 1:43. Girls 800 relay, fourth, 2:00.5. girls pole vault - Dani Benson, first, 7-0.
