Carson City

Students win state vocational contest

Carson High School won first place in the Skills USA contest in Las Vegas April 13-15. Thirty-eight students competed, receiving 21 awards. Every student's score counted toward the school having the highest overall average score per student to give Carson High first place.

First-place awards went to: Zach Copoulos: Architectural Drafting; Shaurav Garg: Internet Working; Shaurav Garg, Sam Saunders, Greg Saunders, Tyler Bourns, Michael Erwine: Quiz Bowl; Matthew Fiske and Laura Licari: Web Design.

Second-place awards went to: Ben Atkins: Automotive Service Technology; Amanda Beer: Job Interview; Gavin Grisamore: Technical Drafting; Christopher Crevling, Alysa Mitchell, Web Design; Michael Cooke: Welding.

Third-place awards went to: Sterling Hamilton, Job Interview; Chris McEachern, Nikkole Whittmer, Allison Foltz, Jimayne Lee, Michael Cook: Quiz Bowl.

Each student tested in three areas, including professional development, leadership skills and finally, their skill areas, like architectural drafting, Internet working or welding.

Middle school raffle to raise funds for band

Eagle Valley Middle School choir and band students will be at Wal-Mart this weekend selling raffle tickets to win a $500 Costco gas card.

The raffle tickets are part of fund-raising that has been occurring throughout the spring to send the students to band competitions.

At a recent silent auction fund-raising event at the school, students raised $3,000 of their needed goal. The hot item was lunch with Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

For more information on raffle tickets, call band teacher Jon Brill at 283-2621 or Gessling at 883-6244. The winner will be picked at 6 p.m. Thursday in the gym.

The raffle was made possible by generous donations from Jean Moffat, Phil Leathers with Edward Jones and the EVMS PTSA.

Behind-the-scenes tours at state museum

The Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St., will host behind-the-scenes tour at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday.

High Desert horse show postponed

The May Fun Daze Horse Show May 7 and 8, sponsored by High Desert Horsemen, has been postponed. For the new date and location, contact Margy Hamilton (775) 629-0807 or www.hdhorsemen.org.

Information fair at Empire Elementary

Empire Elementary School is hosting an information fair from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the school.

Booth sponsors include the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada, Boy Scouts of America, Nevada Hispanic Services, Girl Scouts of America, the Ron Wood Center, the Children's Museum, Brewery Arts Center, the aquatic center, Carson City Parks and Recreation, the Even Start program, a school counselor giving test-taking tips and the Carson City Library.

Spanish-language interpreters will be available.
