Edith Naomi Bremenkampf Bernard

Edith Naomi Bremenkampf Bernard died April 21, 2005, in Carson City. She was born May 4, 1914, in Eureka, to Herman and Jeanette Farlinger Bremenkampf.

After graduation from Eureka High School, she attended the University of Nevada and obtained her teaching certification.

She taught in the rural schools of Charleston in Elko County and Bristol Silver in Lincoln County.

She married Arthur Bernard in 1935 and they moved to Ely in 1942 and to Carson City in 1947.

Mrs. Bernard was a lifetime pianist and patron of the arts. She helped organize the Community Concert Programs in both Ely and Carson City. She was a charter member and served as a board member and past president of the Brewery Arts Center. She served as president of the Capitol Community Concert Association, the Carson Parent Teachers Association, Desert Gardeners and the Carson City Leisure Hour Club. She was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star and P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was instrumental in fund-raising efforts to build a hospital in Carson City in 1951. She was a charter member and past president of the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Auxiliary. In 1951, she was appointed to the committee that negotiated with the estate of railroad magnate C.O. Mills, owner of the defunct Virginia & Truckee Railroad, for 52 acres of railroad land located east of Carson City to be donated for the purpose of establishing a community park. The land donation became Mills Park, named after its benefactor, Ogden Mills.

She played the piano and entertained patients at the Carson Convalescent Center for 17 years and was active in the American Cancer Association and served as Ormsby County Cancer chairwoman.

She was preceded in death by daughter, Layle Lorraine Bernard; brother, Herman Bremenkampf and sister, Francis Bremenkampf Clock.

Among her survivors are her husband of 70 years; son and daughter-in-law Don and Carolyn; daughters Marcia Bernard Cuccaro and Patti Bernard; grandchildren Cobi Hess, Donald Bernard II, Catherine Cuccaro, Kevin Cuccaro and Chelsea White and great-grandchildren Ashley, Hailey and Kelsey Hess, Brooke, Donald and Collin Bernard and Aiden Cuccaro and three nephews.

A private service will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Mary's Hospice of Northern Nevada or to Carson-Tahoe Hospital.
