Symphony seeks musicians playing violin, viola, oboe and bassoon

The Carson City Symphony begins rehearsals for their June 19 "Pops Party" concert at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road. The Father's Day concert features the Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, the Carson Chamber Singers, conducted by Judy Monson, and special guest soloist, harmonica virtuoso Tom Stryker. The program will include music from "Chicago," "Themes from 007," a Stephen Foster tribute, "The Harmonica Player," and more.

The Symphony, named Carson City's "Organization of the Year 2004," is a community orchestra of about 55 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. It is open to string players at any time without audition, and to other instrumentalists when positions are available. Current openings are for violin, viola, oboe and bassoon. Musicians who are interested in joining should contact the Symphony at 883-4154.

Seminar teaches how to grow roses in Nevada

Greenhouse Garden Center will present a free one-hour seminar, "Growing Roses in Nevada" at 11 a.m. Saturday. Learn about the best varieties for our climate and how to locate and prepare a planting area. Additional topics include pruning, pests, watering, and spraying roses. Lecture to focus on reversing diabetes

A free lecture on reversing diabetes with nutrition will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 11 at 969 Springfield Drive, Gardnerville. TV host Wesley Kikuchi, CHA, will discuss the importance of the Glycemic Index if you have insulin-resistant diabetes, why artificial sweeteners, used long term, could be worse than diabetes itself and how a high carbohydrate diet can lead to hypoglycemia and diabetes.

Senior citizens group to meet May 9

The monthly meeting of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club Board of Trustees will be at 9:30 a.m. May 9 at the Douglas County Senior Center.

A representative from U.S. Congressman Jim Gibbons' office will be at the Douglas County Senior Center from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. May 9.

Happy bus headed for John Ascuaga's Nugget

The Carson City Senior Citizens Center's Happy Senior Tours will go to John Ascuaga's Nugget on May 11. Cost of the trip is $16 per person. All seniors must be signed up and paid for by Friday in the Finance Office.
