Carson man named commander of VFW

Michael D. Downey of Carson City has been named All American State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

VFW National Commander John Furgess said, "Commander Downey is one of 33 VFW State Commanders selected as All American State Commander. This prestigious honor is earned through exceptional performance in advancing VFW membership by recruiting new members, retaining present members and increasing the number of life members."

The VFW assists all veterans and their families in obtaining veterans entitlements and other services. In addition, the organization works for the well being of those serving on active duty, in the National Guard and the Reserve. Founded in 1899, its 1.8 million members serve in more than 9,000 posts worldwide.

High school physicals cost $5 on Monday

Carson High School and Carson-Tahoe Hospital have partnered to provide required athletic physicals for incoming freshman, incoming juniors and newcomers planning to participate in high school athletics. The physicals will be offered from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Carson High School's main gym, 1111 N. Saliman Road.

A $5 fee will be charged. No student will be turned away if the $5 fee cannot be met. All fees will be donated to the Carson High School Athletic Fund.

RSVP senior produce vouchers available Friday at center

RSVP will provide a third distribution of coupons for fresh produce at 11 a.m. Friday at the Carson City Senior Center for Carson City seniors 60 years of age and older whose annual income does not exceed $16,613 for an individual or $22,422 for a couple. You must furnish ID.

The program is a cooperative effort by USDA, the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program, the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the Nevada Certified Farmers' Market Association and the Nevada Division for Aging Services, whose purpose is to increase the consumption, production and distribution of locally grown fruits, vegetables and fresh unprocessed herbs, while supplementing nutritional needs for seniors.

RSVP held its first distribution on June 30 at the Carson City Senior Center and a second one Friday at the Community Center; however, RSVP was given additional coupons not used in Las Vegas to redistribute in Carson City. Please note that if you have already received a booklet you cannot receive another as RSVP does check previous distributions.

The booklet contains 15 $2 coupons for a total of $30 toward fresh fruits and vegetables. Participating farmers market dates, places and times will be available when the coupon booklets are distributed.

If you are eligible, go to the Senior Center Friday with your ID to sign up and receive your coupon booklet. If you are unable to attend, a friend or relative may pick up the coupon booklet for you with a signed note and picture ID.
