Blood Services issues statewide alert
United Blood Services issued a statewide emergency blood shortage alert for Type-O blood. The emergency appeal affects the blood supplies of 43 hospitals throughout Nevada.
Donors are asked to respond to the emergency shortage immediately by calling (775) 324-6454 in Northern Nevada.
Freshman orientation starts next week
High school orientation for the freshman class is scheduled next week from 8 a.m.-noon at Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road. Students with last names starting with the letters A-L will meet Wednesday. Students with last names beginning with M-Z are scheduled for Thursday. For information, call 283-1910.
Hospital construction update presented
The Carson City Republican Women will host their monthly luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Carson Nugget. Social time is at 11 a.m. The guest speaker begins at noon. Ed Epperson of Carson-Tahoe Hospital will be presenting up-to-date information on the construction and opening of the new Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. Everyone in the Carson area is invited to hear this important presentation. Cost of the luncheon is $17 for both members and guests, however, reservations must be made by Sunday. Call 841-3553.
Attendees are asked to bring a new or slightly used book that can be used by the elementary schools in Carson City.
Washoe Lake
Slide show of historic Washoe Valley
Park Ranger Jim Black will take you back in time and present a free slide show featuring historic scenes of the settlement of Washoe Valley in the 1800s followed by a brief discussion. The presentation will be from 8-10 p.m. Saturday in the Equestrian Group Area of Washoe Lake State Park.
There is a $4 per vehicle entry fee for the park.

Painting class at senior center
John Romanko, a certified instructor in the Bill Alexander method of "Fast and Easy Wet on Wet Painting" will hold a class from 1-5 p.m. Monday at the Douglas County Senior Center.
The fee is $35 and includes everything you need to complete and take home a painting suitable for framing.
