Kings Canyon Fire Safe Council meeting tonight

The Kings Canyon and Mexican Dam Chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council, recently formed with help from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, are moving forward to help reduce the threat of wildfire to their communities.

The Kings Canyon Chapter will meet 7-9 p.m. tonight at the Carson City office of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12. The Mexican Dam Chapter will meet 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Bureau of Land Management, 5665 Morgan Mill Road. The meetings are open to the public.

Tom Hoffert, Carson City public works operation manager, will discuss utilities activities and a possible fire system with the Kings Canyon group. Tom Tarulli, from the Carson City Fire Department, will also be on hand to talk about the Community Emergency Response Team training program.

The Mexican Dam group will discuss what they found out about dry hydrant installation during a recent trip to the Virginia City Highlands.

JoAnne Skelly, Carson City/Storey County Extension educator, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, has been advising property owners on rehabilitating their landscapes and making their properties more fire safe since last summer's Waterfall fire.

She has been working closely with the Nevada Fire Safe Council, Carson City Fire Department, Nevada Division of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management and USDA Forest Service to help Carson City's neighborhoods be more prepared for this fire season. Brewery jazz festival opens on Wednesday

A discussion of "Jazz Greats of Northern Nevada" is Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 West King Street.

This free event will be moderated by bassist Scott Faulkner and KUNR's jazz host Danna Higley. Musicians Jim Garaventa, Ron Legg and Frank Perry and jazz photographer Pat Glancy will share their expertise of the music scene of Northern Nevada.

The talk, slide show and reception following are open to all free as a lead-in to the weekend "Basically Basie" 2005 Jazz Festival.

The Jazz Festival 2005 runs through Sunday and includes more than 20 free performances, from big-bands to soloists, on two outdoor stages at the BAC.

It is presented by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the BAC.

Washoe Valley

Fuels treatment planned for New Washoe City

The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City Field Office, and the Reno Fire Department are proposing a mechanical and hand fuel treatment of approximately 200 acres adjacent to a residential area on the eastern edge of New Washoe City. The proposed treatment consists of shredding brush on the eastern boundary of New Washoe City and leaving the material in place to stabilize soils and reduce dust. The project is part of a nationwide initiative to protect communities considered at a high risk from wildfire.

A public open house will be from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Washoe Valley Landowners Association, 3740 Esmeralda Drive, New Washoe City.
