Carson City

Donations sought for scholarship

The Patrick and Erin Leahy Scholarship has been presented the past three years to a Carson High School graduating senior to attend the University of Nevada, Reno.

The scholarship has been made possible through the donations of the community; the Leahy family thanks you.

It is time to ask for donations for this cause. Monetary donations are appreciated to raise the amount of the scholarship given to a graduating senior, who is selected by UNR and CHS scholarship committees.

Volunteers needed in fire rehab effort

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension needs volunteers to water 1,000 Jeffrey pine seedlings in Carson City's burned Lakeview area. The Boy Scouts, with help from Nevada Division of Forestry, Carson City, Cooperative Extension and other volunteers, planted the seedlings on April 23 to restore the area burned by the Waterfall fire that burned more than 8,000 acres.

Volunteers are needed to water weekly all summer and fall, through October

It takes 15 volunteers about one hour to water the seedlings. Saturday mornings are best, but volunteers can be scheduled another day, if necessary.

Volunteers should bring good hiking boots or shoes, sunscreen and drinking water and meet at the end of Sandy Circle, south of Lakeview Drive in Carson City.

A number of groups have watered the seedlings this spring and summer, including Lowe's, High Desert Divers, Albertsons, Student Conservation Association (BLM), the Boys and Girls Club, Carson River Coalition, GE, Nevada AAA, and two Boy Scout troops.

Virginia City

Silver Run to benefit elementary school

The Virginia City "Silver Run," a 2-mile walk/run and 10K run will be at 8 a.m. Saturday in Virginia City.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Delta Saloon, starting point of the race. Cost is $30; awards will be given to top-3 finishers in each age group for the 10K and 2-mile runs. The top-three overall females and males will receive awards in the 2-mile walk. Proceeds from the run will benefit Hugh Gallagher Elementary School. Information, call 847-0977.

Galena Creek

Program to teach bear safety to kids

Children ages 7-12 will learn how to become "bear-aware" while better understanding the lives and habits of these animals that share our wilderness, during a free Junior Naturalist Program at 2 p.m. Saturday at Galena Creek Regional Park, 18350 Mount Rose Highway.

Meet at the Stone House Interpretive Center on the south side of the park.

Bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen and water. Groups of five or more are asked to call ahead.

Junior Naturalist Programs are offered by the Washoe County Department of Regional Parks and Open Space.
