Disabled veterans host poker run to raise money to buy vans
The Disabled American Veterans "Vans for Vets" Poker Run for motorcyclists and car enthusiasts is Sept. 17.
Registration is from 9-11 a.m. at Carson City Harley-Davidson, 2749 N. Carson St.
The registration fee of $15 includes a barbecue; extra poker hands are $5.
Proceeds go to the DAV Van Fund. Nevada DAV Chapter 7 is raising funds to purchase three vans for Northern Nevada.
The vans are used to transport veterans to and from medical appointments at the Veterans Administration hospital in Reno.
When the vans reach 150,000 miles, they are pulled from service and need to be replaced. More than $30,000 is needed to replace them.
Contributions are accepted, aside from those from the poker run.

Lesson to precede community dance
A community dance will be held from 7-10 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 911 Beverly Drive
Free dance lessons by Thane Cornell will be offered from 6-7 p.m. Live music will be provided by the Sierra Swing Band. Cost of the dance is $6 per person; refreshments available plus no-host wine bar.

Nominations sought for outstanding-rancher award
The Nevada Cattlemen's Association, the Nevada Farm Bureau, the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the Society for Range Management and the Bureau of Land Management are soliciting nominations for an Outstanding Rancher Award to be presented at the Nevada Cattlemen's Association annual conference banquet Nov. 18 in Reno.
The award will be presented to the nominee who best demonstrates sound and innovative stewardship practices in managing a successful ranching operation.
Management activities could involve vegetation and weed management, fish and wildlife habitat restoration and enhancement, water quality improvement, soil protection and building, watershed improvement and riparian area restoration and protection.
The selection committee will look at what effect the management activities have had on the productivity and profitability of the ranching operation.
Nominations close Sept. 15.
Nomination forms may be obtained from any of the sponsoring organizations or by calling the BLM Nevada State Office, 861-6586.

Arts council creates online calendar of events
The Carson Valley Arts Council has begun an online arts and entertainment Web site for the Carson Valley, which chronicles visual and performing events in a calendar format.
The calendar is free for use by individuals in the Carson Valley who have arts and entertainment news.
Submissions should include contact name, organization (if applicable), phone number, e-mail address (if applicable) and event details.
