Hospital offers health-related classes

Carson-Tahoe Hospital will offer the following classes:

The PSA portion of prostate cancer screenings will be Sept. 12, 14 and 16 at the Adams House and Sept. 15 in Minden. An appointment with the urologist will be Sept. 24. These free screenings are by appointment only and space is limited. For an appointment call 885-4281 or toll free 1-877-284-2627.

The Bariatric Surgery Support Group meets from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Summit Room. Call 885-4308 for information.

Diabetes Education Program, two day class 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 22 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 23. The three-day class is 6-8 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 and 8 a.m.-noon Sept. 10. You must have a physician's referral to be accepted in the class and class days are subject to change. Call 886-7440 to sign up or 885-4122 for information.

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee will host a fund-raiser at the Dayton Valley Country Club and Golf Course Sept. 11. Golf begins with a shotgun scramble at 12:30 p.m. with dinner at 5:30 p.m.

The Biggest Little Quilt Show presents Desert Treasures

The Desert Treasures quilt show will be Sept. 10 and 11 at the Livestock Events Center, Exhibit Hall, 1350 N. Wells Ave., in Reno. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. A donation of $5 per person will be asked at the door; children 12 and under are free.

The event is put on by the Truckee Meadows Quilters which is celebrating its 27th anniversary this year.

Tickets to win the 90-by-104-inch Desert Sun quilt are $1 each or six for $5. The quilt was designed by Joanne Fiorino and was pieced by the guild members and machine quilted by Susan Phillips.

Reno divorces topic of history talk

Reno's history as a divorce capital in the 1930s and '40s is the focus of a video series set to begin Sept. 12 at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno.

At that time, Reno was the nation's center for "quickie" divorces, drawing thousands of temporary residents from across the country.

They came to the Silver State because many states made divorce practically impossible with waiting periods of more than a year and requirements such as proof of insanity or adultery to win a separation. Nevada, however, required only a six week residency period and a statement by one partner that differences in the marriage were unreconcilable.

"Going to Reno: Divorce Story" will air a half-hour episode the second Monday of each month this fall, showing viewers the sites and painting scenes where the divorce trade played out from the train depot to the county courthouse. Each video will be followed by a question and answer period.

Tours during the series will include the former Washoe Pines Guest Ranch and the Truckee River "Bridge of Sighs" where many divorcees threw their old wedding rings.
