Stoloff named Pack men's tennis coach

One of Carson High's and the University of Nevada's most accomplished student-athletes is coming back home.

Chad Stoloff, a 1998 CHS graduate, has been named as the Nevada men's tennis coach. Stoloff played for the Wolf Pack from 1998-2002. Throughout his career, he was a member of the No. 1 doubles team and in his junior and senior years was the No. 1 singles player for Nevada.

He graduated in 2002 with honors and with a degree in political science. Stoloff also won the Stan Bates Award, a $2,000 scholarship given to one male and one female student-athlete in the Western Athletic Conference each year who are going to graduate school.

"I would like to thank Cary Groth and Cindy Fox for this wonderful opportunity to be the next men's tennis coach at the University of Nevada," said Stoloff about Nevada's athletic director and associate athletic director. "This university and athletic department are moving in a forward direction and I am extremely excited and honored to participate in that vision. I look forward to building a nationally recognized program at Nevada with the support of the administration, coaching staff, community and the new women's tennis coach, Sylvain Malroux."

Stoloff has served as an assistant coach for Hawai'i for the past two years. During his time at Hawai'i, the school had four players named WAC Player of the Week/Month and seven players win WAC all-Academic honors.

In 2002-2003, Stoloff served as a volunteer assistant coach for the San Diego State men's tennis team. Due to health reason, then-assistant coach Gene Carswell didn't return until late March and Stoloff helped lead the team in representing Region VII at the National Team Indoor Championships.

Also during that year, Stoloff helped the Aztecs beat Pepperdine, then ranked No. 15, in Malibu, Calif. He went on to help guide the team to the regular season Mountain West Conference title and the conference tournament crown, with the Aztecs won with a 4-0 victory over New Mexico in the finals.

The Aztecs reached the NCAA Tournament's round of 32, beating San Diego 4-0 in the first round. Stoloff also helped coach Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, who earned a No. 1 national ranking and a second place finish in the NCAA Tournament.

Stoloff has coached at many different summer tennis camps and private clubs, including Lakeridge Tennis Club, the University of San Diego, Barnes Tennis Center, and the San Diego Tennis and Racket Club over the past five years.

He recently finished his master's in sports science from the United States Sports Academy, with a double emphasis in sports coaching and sports management. Stoloff replaces Ryan Johnston, who he played for.

"I want to help the student-athletes enjoy a wonderful experience at Nevada through a variety of avenues," Stoloff said. "I was born and raised in this community and enjoyed my time immensely as a player for the Wolf Pack.

"With the unbelievable community support that exists in Northern Nevada, I am looking forward to the wonderful opportunities that stand before us. This school, athletic department and the tennis programs have amazing potential to make everyone proud."
