The Carson High wrestling team picked up a hard earned win over Damonte Ranch at home on Wednesday in Sierra League dual meet action.
Ahron Osheroff (171 pounds), Kyle Banko (130), Travis Lamborn (160), Todd Banko (112) and Martin Azzam (152) all picked up wins for Carson. "We had some solid performances," Carson coach Casey Schweitzer said.
The most dramatic match of the night came at 112 with Banko, who won in double overtime. After neither wrestler was able to score in the first overtime, Banko had the choice of which position to start for the 30-second double overtime because he was the first wrestler to score in regulation.
Banko chose bottom and was able to score an escape for the win. "That was pretty exciting," Schweitzer said.
One of the more impressive efforts for Carson came at 152 where Azzam won by technical fall, winning 17-2. Jonas Schenzel (189), Dan Scarbrough (145) and Robbie Bozin (135) all won by forfeit for the Senators.
Carson will wrestle in two high-caliber tournaments in the next several days. On Friday and Saturday, the Senators will wrestle in the Coast Classic in Scotts Valley, Calif.
The Senators will not have a full team at the Coast Classic as their top five wrestlers will not be there. That's because Carson will have five wrestlers - its top five wrestlers - at the Tournament of Champions to be held Monday and Tuesday at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
Bozin, Schenzel, Lamborn, Kyle Banko and Osheroff will all compete in the TOC, which features wrestlers from across the country. Banko and Lamborn will take 16-0 records into the event.
"It's still early," Schweitzer said. "We're still learning. We're still focusing on getting better."
