The Carson High boys basketball team made a valiant second half comeback before falling short in a 54-46 loss to Corona Del Mar, Calif., on Thursday in the Rail City Classic at Reed.

Carson trailed 31-15 at halftime, but closed to within two points with 2 1/2 minutes left before Corona De Mar was able to pull away.

"We just couldn't get over the hump," Carson coach Bruce Barnes said. "We dug ourselves a hole. We were just pretty flat the first half."

Carson outscored Corona Del Mar 21-13 in the third quarter to close to within 44-36. "I thought the third quarter we made a pretty good run," Barnes said. "I thought it was a great effort the second half."

Corona Del Mar went 6-7 across the front line. "They're awfully big," Barnes said. "They could shoot the ball real well. They presented problems inside."

Adam Houghton scored 14 points and Kevin Brush and Steve Mandoki added eight points for Carson, which continues play in the tournament at 4:30 p.m. today.
