Armando 'Ric' Ricciardi

A memorial Mass for Dr. Armando U. "Ric" Ricciardi, 86, a Reno resident for the past 58 years, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Reno.

Dr. Ricciardi died Dec. 14, 2005, at his home. He was born Nov. 18, 1919, in Providence, R.I., to Pasquale and Maria Marcello Ricciardi.

He graduated from Brown University in 1941 where he was a member of the university's track and field team and its boxing team, from which he earned the Golden Glove Award. After graduating in 1943 from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Base Medical-Dental Unit in Newport, R.I.

He attended USC graduate school and in 1951 moved to Reno to begin an orthodontic practice. He was the first board certified orthodontist in Northern Nevada. He practiced for more than 30 years in Reno and Incline Village.

After retiring at age 64, he began participating in USA Masters track & field events until three years before his death.

He was a Diplomat of the U.S. National Orthodontics Society; President of the Pacific West Coast Orthodontic Society; charter member of Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno; member of Reno Elks Club; co-founder of Reno Mighty-Mites, a youth boxing club; member of Washoe County Search and Rescue; member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church; past member of Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church; member of Knights of Columbus and member and first place champion of USA Masters Track & Field competitions.

He was preceded in death by his infant son Peter Ralph; brothers Anthony and Paul and sister Theresa Ricciardi Bucacci.

Among her survivors are wife Terry; son and daughter-in-law Anthony and Barbara Crumley of Carmel, Calif.; daughter Margena Ricciardi of Carson City; son John; son and daughter-in-law Larry and Charlene Nieri; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Dein Riley; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Mary Ann McElroy and daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Gustave Rossi, all of Reno; brother Guido and sister Anna Natali, both of Narragansett, R.I.; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
