Late pins lift Carson wrestlers past North Valleys

Caleb Davis, Brian Halverson and Kyle Banko logged successive pins to finish the night as the Carson High wrestling team rallied for a 42-34 Sierra League dual meet victory against North Valleys on Wednesday in Reno.

The Senators trailed 34-24 when Davis, a freshman 119-pounder, won his bout by fall in 51 seconds. Halverson followed that with a pin 55 seconds into the second period of his 125-pound match, giving the Senators a 36-34 lead. Then Banko only needed 39 second to close the deal with a pin at 130 pounds - the fastest fall of the night.

"It was a good dual that went back and forth," said Carson coach Casey Schweitzer, whose squad split up to compete in two high-powered tournaments over the past five days - in the Bay Area at the Coast Classic and then the Reno Tournament of Championships on Monday and Tuesday.

Eleven of the 14 matches in the dual were decided by fall as the Senators improved their league dual record to 1-1.

Also for Carson, Robbie Bozin won his 135-pound match by fall in 2:50, Martin Azzam won his 152-pound match in 55 seconds, Ahron Osheroff won his 171-pound match in 3:05 and Matt Heath won his 189-pound match in 4:32.

Osheroff, 15-5 so far this season, won six of nine matches to earn an eighth-place medal at the Reno TOC.

The featured match of the night came at 160 pounds, where North Valleys standout edged Travis Lamborn, 2-1. Lamborn, the reigning Northern 4A Region 160-pound champion, held a 1-0 lead late before Tolley was awarded one point on a technical violation for leaving the mat to tie the score. Tolley, a state tournament alternate at 145 pounds last season, scored the winning point on an escape in the waning seconds.

The Senators compete again next Wednesday and Thursday at the 90-team-plus Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

"We're going to use our break to get a lot of two-a-days (workouts) in to try and get to the next level," Schweitzer said. "Our best wrestling is still down the road. We want to try and step up for zone and state."
