Stroke screenings offered at church

Screenings for risk of stroke will be offered by Life Line Screening on Jan. 9 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 4 Flowery Ave., Dayton. Appointments will begin at 10 a.m.

The screenings use ultrasound technology to scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs. Also offered is a bone-density screening to asses the risk for osteoporosis.

Each screening requires 10 minutes or less to complete. The complete vascular screening package, including the stroke/carotid artery screen, abdominal aortic aneurysm and ankle brachial index, costs $109.

The complete vascular package, including the osteoporosis screening, costs $129.

Storey County senior center plans New Year's at Nine party

New Year's at Nine will be celebrated at the Storey County Senior Center. Cost is $5 for seniors, $10 for others for the light buffet planned and prepared by Kathy and Heather. The party will begin at 6 p.m.

Participants will celebrate the arrival of 2006 early as they drop the ball in Manhattan, at 9 p.m. Pacific time.

Saloons, Piper's host New Year's Eve events

Six saloons, the Gold Hill Hotel and Piper's Opera House are holding special New Year's Eve parties as Virginia City brings in the New Year.

A New Year's dinner and dance featuring dinner music by classical guitarist Don Johnson followed by dancing to the Axe Handle band will begin at 6 p.m. at Piper's Opera House. Sheriff's office to hold academy for citizens

The Lyon County Sheriff's Department will conduct a free Citizens Law Enforcement Academy beginning Jan. 17.

The Citizens Law Enforcement Academy is a 10-week program in which participating citizens attend a 21Ú2-hour class one night a week.

Classes are taught by various law enforcement personnel for the department. Each officer develops his or her own class curriculum, addressing subjects such as basic law, patrol procedures, narcotics, SWAT and officer survival.

Each academy participant also receives hands-on training in arrest control, building searches, vehicle stops and domestic violence resolution. Role-playing is an important component of the program.

The first two classes will be held at the sheriff's office in Yerington; thereafter, the classes will be at the McAtee Building in Silver Springs.
