A funeral service for Washoe elder Winona Kyser James, 102, a native Nevadan, will be 1 p.m. Monday at FitzHenry's Chapel of Faith. A visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mrs. James died Feb. 1, 2005, at her Carson City home.

She was born Sept. 14, 1902, at Van Sickle Station in Genoa to Charlie Kyser Jr. and Lottie Jalsus. She was step-granddaughter to the basketmaker Dat-So-La-Lee.

She was married to rancher Oscar Van Sickle for 12 years before marrying Donald James. She raised two daughters, Thelma and Irene, and a son, Edwin, who died at the age 11.

Mrs. James was a housewife and owner of riding stables at Camp Richardson, Fallen Leaf Lake and Zephyr Cove in her early years.

She was honored at the Lake Tahoe Presidential Forum and attended dinner with President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.

She is preceded in death by her husbands and children.

She is survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private interment will be at Genoa Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her name to the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center Indian Exhibit, 1477 Hwy 395 N, Gardnerville, Nev., 89410.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
