Carson girls roll to easy win

The most difficult decision that Carson High girls basketball coach Alana Williams had was likely when she would go to her bench.

But with Williams team, there really is now bench. Williams' revolving door continued throughout the game as the Senators beat Wooster 60-22 on Saturday at home to improve to 7-3 in league play.

Eleven of Carson's 13 players scored. "I don't call them bench players," Williams said. "I never call them bench players.

"I'm really happy with our younger players. They played hard. I think they're all stepping up."

Kelli Weyrick and Nicole Scott each led a balanced attack with 12 points a piece. Andrea Hoff scored all seven of her points in the first quarter as she saw limited action. Kaitlin Burroughs scored eight points and Sinead McSweeney added six points.

Carson jumped out to a 14-2 lead on the strength of a combined four putbacks from post players Scott and Hoff and a three-point shot from Sarah Johnston. Scott also scored inside on a nice pass from Rosella Nunez during the stretch.

The Senators extended their lead to 18-2 late in the fourth quarter and that's when Williams began to send her players in and out with regularity. Carson led 20-2 after one quarter.

"I think they came out pretty strong," Williams said. She said she was also pleased with her team's defense. "I think they're picking up the defense at the right time of the year," she said.

Weyrick hit a three to begin the second quarter that gave Carson a 23-3 lead. She hit another three that extended Carson's lead to 30-8 late in the second quarter adn Burroughs followed by hitting a jumper that made it 32-8. After Williams called timeout with 10 seconds left to set up a play, the Senators went out and executed it to perfection as Hannah Works found McSweeney inside for a basket at the buzzer to give Carson a 34-8 halftime lead.

Burroughs opened the second half by hitting two straight threes to give Carson a 40-8 lead. The Senators went on to lead 50-15 after three quarters and continued to gradually extend the lead in the final period.

The Senators have a huge week ahead of them as they will play at Reno High on Tuesday and at home against Douglas on Friday in games that will determine their playoff position. Carson is trying to finish higher than fourth in the Sierra League which would mean avoiding a first round matchup with powerful Reed.

Everyone scored in the win for the Carson junior varsity girls basketball team (16-1, 8-1) as Abby Rankl scored 18 points, Sarah Metcalf had 13 points, Sarah Evans had 10 points, Megan Kily had seven points, Brittany DeRosa had six points, Tiffany Barber and Whitney Hoote had four points, Lydia Peri had three points and Kendra Simms added two points.

CARSON FRESHMEN 56, WOOSTER 43

Kelli Brothers scored 10 points, Morgan Nuckolls had nine points, Lialah Molbaligh and Hannah Nystrom each scored eight points, Amanda Osborne had seven points, Kayla Sanchez had five points, Amanda Dines, Meghan Craig and Taylor Stokes each had two points and Alissa Owens added one point in the win for the Carson freshmen girls basketball team (11-7, 6-3).
