Retired music teacher interviewed for radio show; geography bee winners announced

Jackie Maye interviewed

Retired music teacher Jackie Maye, from Carson City, will be interviewed by host Terry Joy from 9 a.m.-9:20 a.m. on KUNR 88.7, Tuesday.

Joy will ask Maye questions about her one-woman show, being a state artist-in-residence, trends in her business and places she's been.

"I am excited and honored to be on the show," she said.

And the winners are ...

The geography bees in the Carson City School district have taken place and the winners are: From Carson Middle School, Tyler Collins, sixth-grade, won first place; Allie Fallon, sixth-grade, won second and Jacob Flansberg, seventh-grade, won third. At Eagle Valley Middle School, Maiya Gessling won first place; Michael Ceccarelli won second-place and Jessica Dang won third. They are all seventh-graders. At Fremont Elementary school, Anthony Papa, a fifth-grader, won first; Grant Maranette, a fourth-grader, took second and Nathan Mital, a fourth-grader, came in third.

First-place winners at each school will take a written geography test and the top 100 winners from around the state will participate in the state geography bee April 1 in Las Vegas. The geography bee is a contest sponsored by National Geographic Magazine for fourth- through eighth-graders. The National Contest is held each spring in Washington, D.C.

Raiders Booster board

The Carson City Raiders Booster Club elected a new board of directors Feb. 6. The 2005 board is a first - an all-woman board.

At President is Nancie Pitts; Vice President and public relations Rhonda Costa-Landers; Treasurer Gloria Langenback; Secretary Leni Manning; Merchandiser Tiffany Lewis; Newsletter Editor Toni Giovanetti.

Appointed positions include: Randy Foster, sergeant-at-arms; Chuck Manning, steering committee representative, Bob Gomez alternate steering committee representative and Joe Shaw, historian.

'Wolf-Packed Fridays'

The University of Nevada, Reno, is offering "Wolf-Packed Fridays" for high school seniors and their parents. Tours of the campus, dorms and even classes will be given. Call 784-4700 for information.

Winterfest

The Winterfest Dance at Carson High School Saturday night was preceded by a week-long of spirited activities to help raise money and support for the school's basketball team. A king and queen are selected each year for Winterfest. This year's were: Daniel Pascual and Veronica Laura-Hernandez, both seniors.
