The Carson City Board of Supervisors recently approved a portion of Riverview Park to be named Korean War Veterans Memorial Park.
The change came after Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 198 of Northern Nevada submitted a request for a name change of a city park.
"No better honor could be bestowed on the Korean veterans, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice," said Richard Hyde, president of the local chapter.
"Thirty-four Nevadans were killed in action by the North Koreans crossing the 38th Parallel on June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953."
Construction of the memorial will put special emphasis on the "Nevada Complex." The Nevada Complex was one of the last major battles of the Korean War. Four hills are designated Carson City, Reno, Elko and Las Vegas in Korea. Four boulders on the memorial site depict those hills.
"They will be dedicated to those veterans whose sacrifices should never be forgotten," Hyde said.
Hyde said the project was initiated by the chapter. Construction cost is estimated at $14,000. Dedication of the memorial will be around Memorial Day.
"Donations to the project are willingly accepted," added Hyde.
Donations can be mailed to the Korean War Veterans Association, P.O. Box 20666, Carson City, 89701.
Architect John Copoulous has given unlimited hours to the project. The park includes four rocks, each representing the Nevada Complex, and three flag poles - one for the United States flag, the Korean flag and the Nevada state flag.
"On behalf of the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 198, we want to thank Mayor Marv Teixeira and the Board of Supervisors for renaming a portion of Riverview Park to Korean War Veterans Memorial Park."
The chapter has received about $4,500 in donations. They need about $9,500 to complete the project.
