A schematic design, as well as cost estimates and other recommendations for a two-story, 46,427-square-foot sheriff's administration building on the site of the old sheriff's office next to the courthouse, will be presented Thursday to the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
Supervisors will be asked to order the final design for the Carson City Sheriff's Department administrative building from Ganthner Melby Architects.
City Manager Linda Ritter said at the same time, the board will be asked to authorize hiring a project manager to oversee the process.
Reception, the civil section, records, auxiliary programs, patrol and property evidence will be on the first floor.
On the second floor will be the sheriff and administration offices, the coroner, detectives, the crime lab and space for a future dispatch center.
The design will take nine to 12 months to complete.
During construction, the sheriff's functions now in the old building will have to be relocated while the building must be demolished to make way for the new structure. Tentative plans are to move records and patrol to the corporate yard on Butti Way. Street operations will move to the main Development Services building this summer.
The budget for the new building, parking, architectural fees and other costs is $12 million. Construction could begin in January and is expected to take about 16 months.
