Carson's Anderson repeats as state GS champ

Devon Anderson got off to a good start in his giant slalom run on Sunday at the NIAA 4A State Alpine Skiing Championships at Mount Rose. And it only got better from there.

The Carson High senior went sped away with his second straight state giant slalom championship, as he posted a time of 28.91 seconds on a sunny day at East Bowl. Anderson's performance that led Carson to sixth-place as a team, and was a fitting climax to his three years of racing for the Senators.

"As a senior going out, defending his title is a great way for him to finish," Carson coach Jack Reinhardt said.

As far as the coach was concerneed, there was no doubt about the outcome once Anderson began his run.

"He had a flawless run," Reinhardt said. "He just ripped on the top. Once I saw that, I knew he had it won because I didn't see anybody better on the top."

Anderson won by three-tenths of a second over the runner-up, Christopher Weber of Reno High in 29.21. Galena's Timber Weiss was a distant third in 30.66, followed by McQueen's Clint Montfalcone (30.86), Galena's Teddy Smith (30.88) and Galena's Chase Houston (30.93).

Reno won the team giant slalom title with 460 points. Galena, with three racers in the top five, was second with 453 points while McQueen and Wooster tied for third with 388 points. Carson, which was missing half of its normal lineup due to schedule conflicts, finished sixth with 349 points.

Also for Carson's boys, Mike Aglietti was 37th (33.95) and Chris Browne was 43rd (35.74).

Another highlight came when the Senators were awarded the NIAA state boys academic championship with a team grade point average of 3.58.

Carson freshman Kacey Potter was 18th in the girls giant slalom on Sunday with a 39.92 clocking. Krista Wisbar was 32nd (42.55), Yvette Hollett was 38th (44.03). Aysia Roberts was 44th (46.34) and Meagan Carter 45th (46.63).

Reno won the giant slalom girls team title by a 466-437 margin over Galena. Carson finished seventh with 328 points.

Reno's Melissa Slocumb was the individual winner with a 35.04 clocking, ahead of Wooster's Christy Wise (35.17) and Jessica Wise (35.52). Galena's Ali Agee was fourth (35.86) and Reno's Julianne Hug fifth (36.69). Galena's sister tandem of Jenny and Nancy Burrows placed sixth and seventh respectively.

Notes: Reno swept both the girls and boys combined team championships. Reno's girls finished with 939 points from the races on Saturday and Sunday, followed by Galena with 861. Reno's boys won by a 932-836 margin over Galena. Carson finished sixth in the girls combined team standings and eighth in the boys standings. Weber and Christy Wise finished as the combined boys and girls individual champions. Potter was 17th in the combined individual girls standings for Carson.
