Honoring a man and his passion: music

It's that the community wants to remember a man who lived so much and gave so much by honoring his passion: Music.

Larry Holloway, who taught band at Carson High School and Eagle Valley Middle School before dying of leukemia two years ago, influenced many in the community, particularly his students.

And that's why its a good reason to keep his love growing by attending Saturday's "Breakfast with Mozart," to honor his dream and the students who share his passion.

The money raised will benefit the Larry Holloway Scholarship Foundation and go to Carson High School students seeking music majors or minors in college.

"Larry Holloway was a great teacher, and kids just loved him," said Jackie Maye, who substituted for him at Carson High. "He's a kind of legend in our town. How is a person able to give so many things? That was Larry."

Last year's breakfast, the first for the Holloway Foundation, raised more than $4,000.

"The only reason I applied for (the scholarship) was I wanted to get something that had Mr. Holloway's name on it because he was such an influential person," said 19-year-old Kaly Kleinfieldt.

The University of Nevada, Reno and former Carson High School student used the $1,000 scholarship to help pay for her music education career in college. Holloway told her not to quit music when she wanted to do so in middle school.

"It was while he was my teacher I found out that I wanted to be a music teacher," she said. "I'm pretty sure he influenced a lot of other kids in the same way."

The breakfast is Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at Senator Square at Carson High School. Call Maye, who will be performing as Mozart, at 882-9571 for information. A light breakfast will also be served. Tickets are $7.50.
