The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City Field Office, is conducting a gathering of wild horses from the Pilot Mountain Herd Management Area beginning today.
Nearly 586 wild horses roam the area and 358 will be removed to achieve the "thriving natural ecological balance" mandated by the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971. The gather is expected to take 14 days.
The Pilot Mountain Herd Management Area is located on 255,040 acres of public and private land, approximately 20 miles southeast of Hawthorne in Mineral County.
